LITURGICAL MUSIC
Of the religious music there are 4 hymnals from the l8th century of especial interest: Harmonia Americana and An Anthem Designed for Thanksgiving Day both printed in Boston in 1791 and 1792 respectively by Isaiah Thomas and Ebenezer T. Andrews. An interesting hymnal is The Psalm Singers Amusement, composed by William Billings and printed in Boston by him in 178l. The oldest and rarest item is The Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs of the Old and New Testament, printed in Boston by Thomas and John Fleet in 1762. Two other early books are Harmonia Sacra, published in Andover in 1816 and A Volume of Sacred Musick, Newburyport, 1814. Most of the remaining religious works date from the 1840s and 1850s.
